The University of West Florida football program will begin defense of its 2019 national championship as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation.

The Argos landed on top of the AFCA Division II Coaches' Top 25 preseason poll released on Monday. They received 26 of 29 first-place votes and 698 overall points.

Minnesota State, who fell to the Argos in the 2019 National Championship game, is ranked second after earning a pair of first-place votes. Ferris State is third while Northwest Missouri State came in fourth after collecting the final first-place vote.

Slippery Rock rounds out the top five, followed Lenoir-Rhyne, Valdosta State, Texas A&M-Commerce, Notre Dame (Ohio) and Colorado School of Mines.

Finishing the 2019 season with a 13-2 record and the program's first national title, West Florida had its 2020 season cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Argos will play their first game in 623 days when they take Division I McNeese State on Sept. 2.
