PANAMA CITY — The Panhandle is under a heat advisoryuntil 7 p.m. Friday.

The heat index had already climbed to 100 degrees in the region this morning, with meteorologists expecting it to top out at 108 degrees today, according to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee.

The NWS warns that residents should take precautions, as the hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat illnesses to occur.

Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of the sun as much as possible today. Residents should check up on their relatives and neighbors, particularly the elderly. And young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

People who work or spend time outside should take extra precautions.

Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded spot. And call 911 for anyone showing signs of a heat stroke.
