This Pensacola coffee kiosk serves caffeine flights and they're all the buzz downtown
Pensacola is buzzing about a new coffee kiosk downtown that serves you your morning pick-me-up in a fun and unique way that's new to the area.
The business is Buzzed Brew Coffee and that concept that people can't stop talking about is caffeine flights.
"People can come in and build their own, they can mix and match different coffees, different lotus," Buzzed Brew owner Crystal Millard said Thursday. "...The possibilities are pretty endless."
The aesthetically pleasing presentation and shareable nature of a beverage flight is mostly synonymous with craft breweries. But Millard has applied that concept to her coffee menu, and she said the early returns have been great.
"It's been amazing," she said. "I announced that they would be available late Thursday, and by Friday I had people coming in getting them. Saturday was just a crazy long line in here."
Just this summer Buzzed Brew locked down a kiosk at the new downtown outdoor dining hall that is The Garden at Palafox + Main. Millard came from Washington state and the Pacific Northwest — a region that's fairly familiar with java — in 2018 and launched Buzzed Brew at the start of this year.
Her rise from small, lemonade-style stand in January 2021 to a kiosk in one of downtown's hottest hubs for food and drink was only elevated by the introduction of the caffeine flights. The options are the "Top Sellers" for $10 and a "Build Your Own" for $12.
The "Top Sellers" includes Buzzed Brew's Palafox Cold Brew, the Barrancas Latte, the White Sands Latte and the Gulf Coast Sunrise Lotus. The latter is a light, cool mixture of guava and peach with pink lotus and orange juice. The White Sands is a white coffee, which in and of itself has been a talker among Millard's customers for its local scarcity.
"It's roasted different than traditional coffee," Millard said, of white coffee. "It's roasted for less time at a lower temperature so it has a completely different color, a different taste. It holds onto more caffeine as well during the roasting process. When people drink it they say, 'Oh, it feels like I'm drinking a milkshake.' Like, it doesn't have that dark coffee flavor."
The mix-and-match flight options allow guests to order secret menu items; all they have to do is inquire.
"You can come in and get a Cinnamon Toast Crunch in your flight, or a Milky Way," Millard said. "We did a 'Baby Yoda' for Pensacon and that was like a pistachio-caramel coffee."
In the week or so since her flights were introduced, Millard said her favorite part of the process occurs when customers bring the wooden flight boards back along with some feedback.
"It's so fun when they come back and I get to say, 'What was your favorite, what did you think?'" Millard said. "And just hearing their response about their favorite or hear them say, 'Wow, I didn't know white coffee existed.' Or, 'the lotus was just so refreshing.' That kind of stuff. So it's been a lot of fun."
Buzzed Brew Coffee is open at The Garden between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Thursday through Monday. The kiosk is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for now.
The Garden at Palafox + Main is at 501 S. Palafox St.
