'Overwhelming demand': Amanda Gorman's forthcoming books score printing of a million copies each
Due to "overwhelming demand" and presales for Amanda Gorman's books, Penguin Random House announced Thursday a first printing of one million copies for each of Gorman’s three upcoming books: "The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country," "Change Sings" and "The Hill We Climb and Other Poems."
A Harvard graduate, National Youth Poet Laureate and the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, Gorman's "The Hill We Climb" — a collectible, jacketed hardcover gift edition of Amanda’s presidential inaugural poem with a foreword by Oprah Winfrey — will be published on March 16. That date was moved up from an April release.
Both her debut picture book, "Change Sings: A Children's Anthem" and "The Hill We Climb and Other Poems" are set to publish Sept. 21.
The publishing news came a day after the NFL announced Gorman had been commissioned to compose an original poem to perform at the Super Bowl about the game's three honorary game captains – Los Angeles educator Trimaine Davis, Tampa, Florida-based nurse manager Suzie Dorner and Marine Corps veteran James Martin of Pittsburg.
Amanda Gorman went viral at Biden's inauguration. What's next for the young poetry sensation?
In the wake of her history-making performance at the inauguration of President Joe Biden earlier this month, the 22-year-old poet's upcoming books have already become bestsellers on Amazon, even though they aren't due for release for several more months.
"I AM ON THE FLOOR MY BOOKS ARE #1 & #2 ON AMAZON AFTER 1 DAY!" Gorman tweeted on Jan. 20, hours after reading her original poem, "The Hill We Climb," on Inauguration Day. "Thank you so much to everyone for supporting me and my words. As Yeats put it: 'For words alone are certain good: Sing, then.'"
And the books seem to have stayed at the top.
As of Thursday, Gorman's lyrical children's book, "Change Sings: A Children's Anthem," is at the top of Amazon's bestsellers in books list. Her poetry collection, "The Hill We Climb and Other Poems," also out Sept. 21, is at No. 2, and the printed copy of her Inauguration Day poem, which is titled "The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country", is No. 4. All three titles are also marked as Amazon bestsellers.
Gorman's upcoming poetry collection is aimed at readers age 14 and up. In a press release from Viking Books for Young Readers, the poet said she hopes the collection can "inspire and uplift readers with its verse at a time when we could all use more poetry in our lives, no matter our age.”
On Instagram, Gorman shared the cover of her children's book, writing that she wrote "Change Sings" "as a children’s anthem to remind young readers that they have the power to shape the world."
"I felt strongly that the book should come out in 2021, when children would be facing the results of the 2020 election, and whatever those would be, I wanted them to know they were the leaders of the future," she added. "I had no idea that around the same time, I myself would be named the youngest inaugural poet at that time! So I am too learning and living the lesson of 'Change Sings.'"
