Two Jacksonville police officers are on administrative leave following an officer-involved shooting that left a suspect dead Saturday evening.
A suspect is dead and two officers injured after an officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville's Urban Core neighborhood, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
JSO Sgt. T.K. Waters said Officer J. Garriga and Officer K. Graham were patrolling in the 3000 block of Buckman Street at 5:11 p.m. Saturday when they conducted a traffic stop on a dark-colored four-door vehicle. During the stop, Garriga made contact with the vehicle's driver. During their conversation, Garriga realized the driver had a handgun inside the vehicle, according to Waters. Garriga asked the suspect to step outside the vehicle, and the suspect complied.
As Garriga began to escort the suspect to the patrol car, Waters said the suspect pushed Garriga away and a struggled ensued. The suspect jumped back inside the car.
Waters said the suspect reached toward the gun as Garriga tried to gain control. During the struggle, the suspect hit the accelerator and the car quickly moved forward where Garriga's body was partially exposed to the vehicle.
Once the vehicle came to an abrupt stop, Waters said Garriga shot at the suspect four times, striking him.
Officers performed CPR on the suspect during a search of the vehicle. The suspect was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Waters. Both officers Garriga and Graham were taken to a hospital with minor injuries and have since been released.
JSO has not released the name of the victim, pending notification of family members, however, Waters said the suspect had no criminal history.
This was the first officer-involved shooting for Garriga, an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for a year and half, Waters said. Graham, on the job for nearly four years, did not fire his weapon, Waters said.
Both officers, who were wearing body cams, were immediately placed on administrative leave per department policy, Waters said.
