Navarre Pier hosted 'A Day at the Dunes' on Saturday morning as hundreds came out to learn more about the environment and plant sea oats at Navarre Pier.

NAVARRE BEACH — Some 500 volunteers came out Saturday morning to do some good for the environment at the Navarre Beach Pier, which hosted A Day for the Dunes to promote the importance of coastal ecosystems.

Dune Doctors, The Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center and the Navarre Beach Marine Science Center teamed up for the event, which consisted of a beach cleanup, educational activities and Planting for Protection.

The first 100 families to register helped plant sea oats next to the pier. Sea oats are key to the beach’s ecosystem because they help protect the beach against coastal erosion during extreme weather events.
