NAVARRE — The Navarre Beach Area Chamber Foundation and headline sponsor Okaloosa Gas District are hosting the 7th annual Okaloosa Gas Navarre Fishing Rodeo.

The event is Oct. 5-6 and is one stop on the 16th annual Beaches to Woodlands Tour. It benefits Navarre’s Take a Kid Fishing and Navarre Beach Marine Park entities.

The registration fee is $48 at NavarreFishingRodeo.com and at Half Hitch Tackle in Navarre.

Registrants receive a “Captain’s Bag” filled with gifts from sponsors. Mojo Sportswear Co. is partnering with the rodeo for the fourth year by providing a performance fishing shirt valued at $55 for the first 200 paid participants who register.

The event coincides with the annual Take A Kid Fishing clinic 8-11 a.m. Oct. 5 on the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier. The children get hands-on fishing instructions and receive free fishing poles to take home.

Admission to the pier is free both days of the rodeo during Fish Navarre Weekend. Annual passes to the pier will be sold during the weekend at a 10% discount courtesy of Santa Rosa County.

“The fishing rodeo is the event we look forward to all year long. It is great fun and we are so pleased and excited to have Okaloosa Gas joining us again as the title sponsor. We are proud of all the work they are doing in Navarre,” foundation President Mike Sandler said.

Several divisions will highlight the rodeo, including the Navarre Seafood Open Division and the Walmart Kayak Division; Windjammers Junior Division, and the Scooter’s Fish House Offshore Slam, Scooter’s Fish House Inshore Slam, the Sunrise Marine Super Slam and the Invasive Lion Fish Division, which requires no registration fee.

Bragging rights, trophies and cash prizes are on the line and the competition is open for nine days, starting Sept. 28 with the Lion Fish Division.

Fishing can be done from almost anywhere except local seafood markets: fish from the pier, the beach, in the sound, in the bay, or from a boat or kayak. The boundaries are from the Pensacola Pass to the Destin Pass and all points north as long as you are still in Florida. Weigh-ins will take place 1-4 p.m. at Juana’s Pagodas each day.

Navarre Beach Leaseholders is sponsoring an opportunity to win a Jackson Kayak Coosa FD valued at $2,999. Raffle tickets are $20 each or three for $50 if purchased at the same time. Visit www.navarrefishingrodeo.com for details. The winner will be announced Oct. 6 at the awards ceremony.

Proceeds benefit the Navarre Beach Marine Park Marine Sanctuary, Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center, and the Navarre Beach Science Station.

“Navarre has been an intricate piece to the pipeline system of Okaloosa Gas since the early 1990s,” said Gordon King, Okaloosa Gas District CEO. “As our system grows, our company sees the importance of actively participating in all the communities we serve to include Navarre.”
