The driver of the Kia lost control of the vehicle, struck a guardrail and ended up on a trailer they were towing.

Carl Hamilton, a 72-year-old Freeport man, died Friday evening as a result of a single-vehicle traffic accident on Interstate 10 in Santa Rosa County.

Genevieve Hamilton, 75, was driving east on I-10 at just after 8:30 p.m. when she was passed by a big truck and lost control of her vehicle, a Florida Highway Patrol news release said.

The Kia Sorento she was operating spun and struck a guard rail on the south shoulder, the release said. A trailer the Hamiltons were towing became detached from their SUV and went underneath the vehicle, and the SUV came to rest on the trailer facing west, the release said.

Carl Hamilton, who the release said was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Genevieve Hamilton, who was reported to have been wearing a seat belt, was also taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center and was listed by the FHP as being in serious condition.
