HAMMOND, La. (AP) " Louisiana State Police say a man fleeing a traffic stop dragged a trooper across a roadway and escaped with nearly 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds) of methamphetamines.
Police tell news outlets that 39-year-old Darrell Ray Smith Jr. is charged with offenses including attempted murder of a police officer. A state police statement says troopers pulled over Smith early Thursday because of a traffic violation near Port Allen.
It says troopers conducting the stop "became suspicious of criminal activity," searched the vehicle and uncovered the meth. They attempted to arrest Smith, who fought them off and tried to flee while one trooper was stuck in the car's driver's side door jamb. It says the trooper broke free and sustained minor injuries.
Smith ultimately escaped the stop and was arrested later in Hammond. It's unclear whether he has a lawyer.
