A 22-year-old Iowa man on his honeymoon drowned Tuesday afternoon while swimming in the ocean off Florida A1A near Crescent Beach, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said.
Dalton Rae Cottrell of Malcolm was declared dead after being pulled out of the surf about 1 p.m. by a lifeguard and a beach-goer, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The beach-goer told deputies he heard someone yelling in the surf and grabbed his paddleboard to head into the water, according to the incident report. He joined up with a St. Johns County lifeguard, who placed the victim onto the paddleboard and returned to the beach. CPR was performed on Cottrell, but he didn’t make it.
The man’s wife told deputies they were both in the ocean when the current pulled them out deeper, the report said. This was Cottrell’s first time in the ocean, and his wife said he “started to freak out.” She tried to help, but Cottrell was struggling and pulled her underwater.
