FORT WALTON BEACH — A man was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison and 10 years' probation on multiple charges, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

Marcus Mitchell, 36, was charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm, aggravated child abuse, tampering with a victim or witness in a felony and resisting an officer without violence, a news release from the State Attorney's Office said.

The charges stem from a 2017 incident in which Mitchell drunkenly attacked a child and mother. Mitchell pleaded to the charges Monday in addition to a violation of probation charge of aggravated battery on a pregnant person.

Mitchell returned intoxicated to his home in Crestview on Oct. 14, 2017, and attacked a 4-year-old child, breaking her wrist. When the child’s mother intervened, he broke her nose. The mother tried to call law enforcement for help, but Mitchell took away her cellphone, according to the release.

The woman escaped the home to try to get help from the neighbors. She knocked on a neighbor’s door, and although the neighbor was too afraid to open it, the neighbor called 911 and watched through a window as Mitchell dragged her back to his home.

Okalooosa County sheriff’s deputies arrived and ultimately had to tase Mitchell to subdue him, the release said.

Okaloosa County Circuit Judge Michael Flowers imposed the sentence. Assistant State Attorney Angela Liles prosecuted the case.
