A new condominium complex is planned for downtown Tuscaloosa.

Bill Lunsford Construction and Development is constructing the $5 million Summit on 7th at the southeast corner of Seventh Street and 27th Avenue.

Site work began last week and tenants are expected to be able to occupy the units in February 2019.

Ron Price, vice president of development for Bill Lunsford Construction, said the three-story building will feature 15 two-bedroom units and five one-bedroom units along with an exercise room and a private, gated parking area.

Prices range from $235,000 to $299,500.

Bill Lunsford Construction is the company behind RiverWalk Place, the 22 luxury condominium and retail project on Jack Warner Parkway.

Development of the 3.3-acre site was in the works for more than half a decade when construction on the Riverwalk Place project began in 2011.

The project was first proposed in 2004 as an an eight-story building with 56 condo units.

But residents in nearby neighborhoods objected to the project and the city asked Lunsford to consider a mixed condo-retail development, instead.

The redesigned Riverwalk Place project resulted in the two three-story buildings, separated by an open green space, with first-floor office space alongside Another Broken Egg Café, Orange Leaf Yogurt and River restaurants.

The company also recently completed the townhouse project called Capitol Corners at the corner of Sixth Street and 29th Avenue across from Capitol Park.

Each of the six units contain two bedrooms with two-and-a-half bathrooms and are priced at $300,000.

Located in the city’s historic district, Price said the company’s architect, Leah Alexander, incorporated aspects from nearby structures such as the old Tuscaloosa County jail, the Old Tavern and the Capitol School.
