Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office worked through night on social media threat targeting Holley Navarre Middle School.

NAVARRE — The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office has identified the person responsible for a social media shooting threat at Holley Navarre Middle School.

Sheriff's deputies received a complaint at 7 p.m. Thursday related to a threatening message from an unknown source that was shared over Snapchat.

Sheriff's investigators worked overnight Thursday to locate the source of the message. The Sheriff's Office said in a press release issued at 3 p.m. Friday that its investigation confirmed the threat had no credibility.

The incident was referred to Santa Rosa County School District administrators any disciplinary action, the press release said.

Superintendent Tim Wyrosdick said Friday afternoon that 350 of 1,000 students were absent from Holly-Navarre on Friday. That is about 225 more absences than normal.

"We did determine who was responsible and we'll deal with them accordingly," Wryosdick said. "The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office has done an amazing job. All of the Navarre schools had extra deputies on campus. To validate it was not a credible threat was so valuable."

SRSO noted that all threats to our schools are taken very seriously. Those found to be responsible can face felony charges and will be prosecuted.

Principal Joie DeStefano issued this statement on the school’s Facebook page:

This is Joie DeStefano, principal of Holley-Navarre Middle School. This evening the Santa Rosa Sheriff's Department informed me they are investigating a Snapchat thread that contained statements concerning a potential violent act at our school.

The sheriff's department is continuing to investigate the origin of this thread and has assured me they will have as a precautionary measure ... additional officers on our campus tomorrow.

Please note that the safety and security of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. Therefore, we encourage you to discuss this matter with your child and we ask you to notify the school if you obtain any information that may lead to the identity of the individual who sent the message.

Finally, while there is no definitive proof to the statements made we fully understand if you choose to keep your child home from school tomorrow. Any absences will be excused.
