Fall sports kickoff this weekend at UWF
The University of West Florida cross country, soccer and volleyball teams are set to open the 2010 fall season this weekend. The season will officially start tomorrow as the UWF men’s soccer team travels to take on NAIA rival Spring Hill on the road at 5:00 p.m.
Sports action will continue on Friday, as the Argos women’s soccer and volleyball teams host home tournaments, while the men’s and women’s cross country teams travel west to open their season on Saturday in Arizona.
Friday’s home action will be highlighted by the two-day, 19-match Comfort Inn-vitational hosted by the West Florida volleyball team at the UWF Field House.
Teams from across the nation will hit the courts starting on Friday, including West Florida taking on Southern Indiana and Eckerd at 11:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
Saturday, the Argos will face Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras at 1:30 p.m. and Missouri-St. Louis at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Argos are coming off two straight GSC championship seasons and is picked to win a third in the GSC preseason coaches’ poll.
The No. 2 ranked West Florida women’s soccer team will host the ArgoFanShop.com Invitational on Friday and Sunday.
The Argonauts and fellow GSC rival North Alabama will face Sunshine State Conference foes Barry and Nova Southeastern in a regional crossover.
UWF faces Nova Southeastern on Friday in the season opener at 7:30 p.m., and the Argos come back on Sunday to face Barry at 1:30 p.m.
The Argos will look for a third straight GSC title and fourth in five years, and they were picked to finish first in the GSC coaches’ poll for the seventh straight year.
The Argos men’s soccer team kicks off the season with a pair of road games, first at Spring Hill on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. and then on Saturday against Tennessee Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m.
The Argos have won four straight GSC championships and were picked first in the GSC preseason coaches’ poll for the ninth straight season. UWF will open its home schedule on Friday, September 10 against No. 10 Rollins.
Finally, the West Florida cross country teams will head west to open their seasons at the George Kyte Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona on Saturday.
The UWF men’s cross country team placed fourth in the conference last season, and the Argos women’s team placed second.
The Argos will host the Gulf Coast Stampede this year on September 25 at the Escambia County Equestrian Center, with the women’s 5k scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. and the men’s 8k to start at 8:00 a.m.
