Moulder is ready to set sail to PJC
Success comes before work only in the dictionary.
And many on the Milton High campus can see that first hand if they follow catcher Roy Moulder around.
Wednesday Moulder signed a scholarship to play baseball next season for Pensacola Junior College.
Moulder not only worked hard on the field, but also when it came to making his decision as he had plenty of offers for his services after graduation.
“PJC was the opportunity for me,” said Moulder who heard from colleges like Jeff Davis Community College, Lurleen B. Wallace, Davidson and Mercer. “They have one of the best baseball programs in the area if not the country.
“I am looking to go there two years and during that time raise my stock as a catcher.”
Of course Moulder also realizes that Pirates baseball coach Bill Hamilton knows several people in college baseball and could offer what he needs in getting to the next level.
For Pensacola Junior College they feel very confident in the player they are getting in Moulder.
“I know coach (George) Blake and if he did half the job with Roy as he did for me then I can wait for him to arrive at PJC,” said PJC coach Keith Little. “I know what Blake did for me and how he helped me.”
Milton head coach George Blake knew he had something special with Roy the moment he arrived at Milton and became his position coach.
“I can’t begin to tell you how proud of Roy I am today,” Blake said. “I knew when he got here he had a chance.”
But Blake and Little are not the only two that noticed the talents of Moulder on the baseball field; Milton athletic director Murray Rutledge noticed it as well.
“Each day when I would do my running I would always see Roy hitting with his dad,” Rutledge said. “It might have been soft toss or something else, but they were working together every day and it has paid off.
“Roy is a great kid and he deserves this opportunity.”
Moulder knows the opportunity ahead of him and he is not afraid of the hard work it will take to keep it.
“Coach Hamilton told me it was my spot to lose,” Moulder said. “He told me if I come in and work hard I would be his everyday guy.”
According to those who have watched Moulder at work, the work ethic is already there.
