Argos sweep Montevallo
The University of West Florida baseball team completes a three game sweep over Montevallo with a 13-10 and 9-2 win in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon to improve to 3-0 on the young season. In game one the Argos battled back from a late three run deficit to pull out the come-from-behind 13-10 win. In the nightcap West Florida jumped out to a 3-0 and never looked back as they cruised to a 9-2 victory.
In game one Montevallo jumped out to an early lead with a solo homerun off the bat of their shortstop Scottie Deason in the bottom half of the first inning. UWF responded right back to take the lead in the third inning with a four run inning. Greg Pron led the charge, blasting his second homerun in as many games, a three run shot to dead center. Pron would finish the game 3-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored.
With the score 6-2 in the Argos favor heading into the bottom of the fourth, the game took a sudden turn. The Falcons would knock two two-run homeruns in the span of the first four batters of the inning to tie the game up at six. Three more runs would cross the board to cap a seven run inning and give the Falcons a 9-6 lead.
West Florida’s offense would pick back up in the seventh as they tacked on seven runs in the final three innings. Zach Taylor led the way for the Argos going 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Freshman Ty Sullivan would pick up his first collegiate win, tossing the final 2.2 innings while striking out four.
In game two the Argos hopped out to a quick 3-0 in the first inning. Brandon Brewer led of game with a single and was followed by a walk by Kyle Brown. Dustin Lawley then knocked a double down the left field line to drive in one run. Taylor followed up with a line drive single up the middle, scoring both Brown and Lawley to give West Florida a 3-0 lead.
After the first inning the Argos would cruise their way through the rest of the game, tacking on runs in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Taylor once again had another four RBI game while going 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
West Florida starting pitcher Jason Postill went five strong innings to pick up his first win of the season, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five.
With the three game sweep of Montevallo this Argo squad becomes the first UWF team to sweep Montevallo since 2005 and marks the first time since 2006 that the Argos start the season 3-0. In 2006 UWF began the season with a 5-0 record.
West Florida returns to action today at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader against Rollins College in the Argos home opener.
