After reading about FSU President John Thrasher’s annual pay being raised to $563,000, plus an additional $200,000 bonus, I did some research to learn what special credentials he brought to the job when hired in 2014.

Turns out he has a 1965 bachelor’s in business and a 1972 law degree. Beyond that, he has no training or experience in the field of education. No doctorate or even a master’s degree.

Instead he went into politics, where he limited-out in the Florida House before moving to the Senate. He has served as chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, and was co-chairman of Governor Scott’s re-election campaign.

These “essential qualifications” led Governor Scott’s hand-picked Board of Trustees to pick Thrasher over the other three finalists (all of whom were professionals from other top universities) to run this key institution of higher learning.

With student tuition payments likely contributing the bulk of his income, am I the only one who wonders if Thrasher is maybe being paid more than he’s worth?
