Train derails in Milton
Six-engine freight train off the tracks near Avalon Boulevard
At 6:22 a.m., emergency officials received a call of a train derailment in Milton due to a CSX train derailed near Avalon Boulevard.
Foggy conditions made locating the derailment difficult.
Joy Tsubooka, Santa Rosa County public information officer, said the train included six engines and 46 cars. Of these, the six engines and 13 of the cars jumped the tracks while the train was headed east.
Reports say several yards of railroad track are torn from the railroad bed and there are railroad ties and other track debris strewn around the area surrounding the accident site.
One of the tankers was carrying petroleum and there was a leak of around 200 gallons resulting in a strong odor in the surrounding area.
One tanker was carrying carbon dioxide and Tsubooka says there is no threat at this time, although it is being vented as a precautionary measure.
The lead engine is being dug out with a backhoe and cranes are being brought in to assist with the clean up of the derailed cars.
Tsubooka says no evacuations were necessary.
No evacuations are planned, Tsubooka said.
More details will be posted as they become available.
