Hundreds came out to Pensacola Junior College’s campus Saturday to partake in some of Paul Bunyan’s favorite activities.
The 22nd annual Pensacola Junior College Forestry Conclave and Lumberjack Festival went underway where citizens got the chance to participate in competitions such as axe throwing, log rolling, and crosscut sawing.
Several people traveled from out of town just to watch the events, including Betty Countryman from Pensacola.
“This is our first time at this event, but we’ve always wanted to go,” she said. “We wanted to see what all they had here, because we’ve seen it in Maine before.” Mark Smith from East Milton said this was also his first time, but always had an interest in lumberjacking.
“I’ve always been interested in the outdoors and lumberjacking, so I was interested to see what was out here,” Smith said.
Several people admitted they had never attended a festival like the one put on at PJC, but said they enjoyed their time, and the 65-degree weather and sunshine.
“I’ve always heard people talking about it before, but I’ve never actually gone to one,” said Matthew Dakota of Pensacola. “Seeing it first hand is a lot of fun.”
Events such as a softball toss, log rolling, and face painting kept children entertained at the event, along with plenty of food to keep their stomach’s company.
Among the children’s events were bluegrass music and nature exhibits put on by several sponsors.
