Early voting deadline for special election ends today

Back in the first week of March, county commissioners discussed the importance of the upcoming special elections, which will replace the empty seat left by District 4 representative Ray Sansom.

The special primary election, which will be held Tuesday March 23 is filling in the empty House seat after Sansom’s resignation mid-February.

Early voting for the special elections began on Monday and continued through today. The special general election will be held next month on the 13th.

Ann Bodenstein, supervisor of elections said this special election is important for the district because Sansom has been absent from his seat since his resignation in February.  The Florida legislature has been rushing to get another person in the seat until the upcoming August elections.

“They don’t have a republican in legislature this year because Mr. Sansom resigned,” Bodenstein said.

The supervisor of elections said the person who is voted into office would have a short term, four months to be exact.

“As soon as the general election is held on the 13th of April, that person will be sworn in,” Bodenstein said. “That person will stay in the office until the August elections.”

On the first day of early voting, fewer than 20 people came out to vote at the ballots.  As of Wednesday afternoon, Bodenstein said there were nearly 120 votes that had been cast in the early voting.

“The voting starts up around Midway and goes down the county line,” Bodenstein said.

Sansom resigned on Sunday Feb. 21 from the Florida Legislature after eight years as a House member.

East and West Navarre, Holley, Midway, Biscayne Pointe, Navarre Beach, Parkway, Woodlawn, and Hidden Creek are the Santa Rosa precincts taking part in the special election.
