Senior Expo 2010

One word could describe the 12th annual Retired and Senior Volunteer Program’s Senior Expo Health Fair on Thursday—free.

The annual expo that was held in the Milton Community Center Thursday morning has been offering free services to the Santa Rosa Community for well over a decade, and this year was no exception.

“This expo is offering free health screenings, and this gives citizens an opportunity to see what services we offer here in the community,” said Dr. Cathia Mendez, a Santa Rosa Medical Center representative who helped put on the expo.

Citizens weren’t the only one’s being educated about their health.  Pensacola Junior College students came out to give free blood pressure screenings, and a local doctor came out to assist them with any questions the students might have.

“Students were able to get counseling from the medical doctor that came here this morning,” PJC instructor Mary Turner said. “This is the first time we’ve had a doctor out here to help.”

There were several doctors who came throughout the day to offer free services to the elderly according to SRMC representative Aleta Hoodless.

“There are a lot of free services offered here today,” Hoodless said. “This is important for the seniors in our community.”

There were several hundred dollars worth of free services to be exact, and Turner said that was a big deal for the county.

“For the people that can’t afford services like these, yes, this expo is very important,” Turner said. “I can’t even imagine how much all of this would cost.”

One citizen, Linda Windham said this was her second year in attendance, and for a good reason.

“Some people do not have the health insurance to have these tests run,” she said. “It’s great they can offer these services free to the people.”

Lesterd Black Sr., another Santa Rosa citizen couldn’t agree more with Windham as he waited for his wife to get done with her osteoporosis screening.

“This is extremely important, especially for the elderly people,” Black said.
