Classic guitarist mixes Hendrix & Bach
The Pensacola Junior College Lyceum series presents internationally acclaimed guitarist composer Benjamin Verdery.
The concert is 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium, Building 8, on the Pensacola campus. Verdery has enjoyed an innovative and eclectic musical career. Critics have said he belongs to a group of American guitarists who do not see a clear division between popular music and classical music. A Verdery program can look like this: Prince and Jimi Hendrix next to Johann Sebastian Bach and Leos Janacek, next to his own compositions. The PJC performance includes works by Bach, Johann Strauss, Martin Bresnick and Janacek, as well as Verdery’s “Be Kind all the Time,” a piece for electrified classical guitar and digital delay, an “Scenes from Ellis Island,” a composition featuring the Pensacola Guitar Orchestra.
In addition to writing and performing, Verdery has chaired the guitar department at the Yale University School of Music since 1985. Tickets are $10, general admission; $8, seniors, children, non-PJC students; $6, Senior Club members, PJC staff/faculty/retirees; free, PJC students. VISA, MasterCard, American Express, cash or check are accepted.
Purchase tickets at the Lyceum Box Office in the Ashmore Fine Art Center, 1000 College Blvd.
