Brush fire takes out child's play set, boat
NAVARRE — A brush fire Friday afternoon behind a mobile home on Timber Lane resulted in around $5,000 in damages.
According to Holley-Navarre Fire Department Chief Ron Norton, the resident of the home had dumped out an ashtray into a barrel filled with trash and debris.
The man left the home to have lunch at a neighbor's home and the fire spread across the backyard. The man didn't realize the fire had erupted until fire trucks pulled in at around 12:30 p.m.
"He was completely surprised," Norton said. "He didn't know there was a fire until he heard our sirens."
The fire burnt a plastic child's play set, two lawn mowers, a 15-foot boat and a kayak. About a quarter of an acre was left charred once the fire was put out.
The mobile home was not damaged, Norton said.
