Obituaries - February 6, 2010

Luzmoor, Gloria

1931 – 2010

Gloria was born in New Brockton, Alabama to Ben F. Cox and Myrtie Rutan. Her simple beginnings, living in Geneva and surviving the Great Depression molded her character and love of family, children, animals, and the beauty of nature.

Preceding Gloria in death were her parents, Ben F. Cox and Myrtie Rutan Cox Melvin; her stepdad, George Francis Melvin; her sons, Blaine Richard Luzmoor and Ronald James Luzmoor; and her brother-in-law, Rudy Senser.

Gloria graduated from Geneva High School in 1949 and later attended nursing school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her nursing career began at the Crippled Children’s Home in Pensacola and then at Santa Rosa Hospital in Milton, where she cared for pediatric patients for approximately 20 years. After leaving the hospital, which was then known as Santa Rosa Medical Center she worked for a home health agency until she was hired at Northview Community in Pensacola. Her passion to care for sick and disabled children finally comes full circle at the end of her career.

Gloria is best known for her love of good jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, or novels. Her collection of over 800 paperback books include Louis L’Amour collection and mysteries like Perry mason,, Murder She Wrote, and Nancy Drew.

Gloria’s walk with the Lord and love of her church family at Christ United Methodist Church was the foundation of her life. Her soft speech and sweet spirit was observed by all who knew her. Even at the end of this new challenge, it was not uncommon for the nursing staff or doctors caring for her to state how sweet and cute she was. She had a loving, caring heart always thinking of others and helping whenever she could. She cherished her children, grandchildren, friends, and had a special bond with her cats.

She is survived by her daughter—Donita (Scott) Rosenberg; her grandchildren—Timothy Shawn Luzmoor, Jenna Nichole Lunsford, Christopher Luzmoor, and Denise (Jordan) Amos; her great grandchildren—Nicolas James and Weston Blaine; her sisters—Faye (Bill) Spencer and Linda Senser; her nieces and nephews—Debra (Fred) Robinson, Marty (Sue) Senser and Suzie (Jim) Price; her great niece and nephews—Spencer, Lacy, and Nicholas; and several special friends.

The family wishes to thank those who cared for Gloria at UniHealth, Sacred Heart Hospital, and Covenant Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Avalon Middle School’s Book Club.

The family received friends for visitation at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel, on Thursday, January 21st, 2010 with the funeral following at 6 p.m. Pastor John F. Edwards officiated. Graveside services were Friday, January 22, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the Friendship Cemetery, Chancellor (Geneva), Alabama.
