Cake catches fire, chars kitchen
NAVARRE — First responders went to the scene of a kitchen fire at Hilton Drive on Wednesday evening.
Around 5 p.m., a cake a woman was baking for her daughter's Girl Scout troop caught fire in the oven, said Holley-Navarre Fire Chief Ron Norton.
While the mother and her younger son were in a different room, the daughter saw the oven catch fire. According to Norton, the girl called for her mother who exited the house with the younger boy.
The girl then called 911. After both children were out of the home, the woman attempted to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, but was not able to control the fire.
With damage to the oven, microwave, cabinets and clean up, Norton estimated costs at around $5,000.
After the fire, Norton said the remains of the cake were no where to be found.
"It was gone," he said. "There was nothing left in that oven."
Midway Volunteer Fire and Navarre Beach Fire responded to the scene.
