Milton man charged with DUI manslaughter
A Milton man turned himself into Milton Police Thursday evening pending a warrant that was sought for DUI manslaughter of a Milton man from an incident that occurred in late February.
Jeremy Hammill was charged with DUI with property damage, DUI with serious bodily injury and DUI manslaughter after killing a Milton man and seriously injuring a Milton woman.
According to the police report, Hammill struck another vehicle after running a red light heading north on SR 89 at the intersection of Hamilton Bridge Road on February 27.
The Toyota pick-up driven by Hammill struck the right side of a passenger car after it ran a red light at the intersection, which pinned the passenger, Dwight Davis of Milton inside the vehicle.
When officers arrived at the scene, fire department personnel were extricating Davis from the vehicle, who had gone into cardiac arrest. It was believed at the time that the passenger had suffered a right punctured lung.
Lifeguard Ambulance transported the passenger to Santa Rosa Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The driver of the sedan was transported to Sacred Heart hospital by Lifeguard Ambulance, and suffered a cracked sternum, a broken scapula, and broken ribs along the right side of her body.
When officers spoke to Hammill, the odor of alcohol was evident on his breath according to the report, and the driver admitted he had been at Texas Roadhouse earlier where he consumed alcoholic beverages.
Hammill admitted to striking the other vehicle and running the light.
Officers obtained blood samples from Hammill, which registered at .26 BAC, which was a little over three times the legal limit. Because Hammill’s BAC was above.20, which is the enhanced penalty BAC level in Florida, he could face harsher fines and jail time.
After obtaining information on the report, an officer went to the restaurant to obtain more information on how much alcohol Hammill had consumed prior to the incident.
A bartender met with police at a later date and admitted that they had served Hammill four 10-ounce beers with little food.
Hammill remains lodged at Santa Rosa County jail with $517,500 bond.
