City of Milton meetings

City of Milton’s Post Retirement Medical Board of Trustees will meet on Jan. 31 at 10:30 a.m. in Conference Room B at Milton City Hall.

Milton’s Public Safety Committee will meet Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. in Conference Room B at Milton City Hall.

Milton City Council will meet in executive session Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.

The Milton Community Redevelopment Agency will meet Feb. 14 at 4:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.

Milton City Council will meet in regular session Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.

City of Milton’s Ordinance Review Committee will meet Feb. 16 at 8 a.m. in Conference Room B at Milton City Hall.

Dan Kirkland In Concert at Olivet Jan. 29

Dan Kirkland will be in concert at Olivet Baptist Church at 6 p.m., Jan. 29. Dan, a member of Olivet, has been singing southern and traditional gospel music for 28 years. He has held concerts in churches and at special events all over the southeastern U.S., sharing the stage with The Kingsmen, Gold City, The Hoppers, The Wilburns, The Greens, The Hendersons, Squire Parsons, and many other groups. Kirkland was called into this ministry to spread the gospel in song and testimony by lifting up the name of Jesus and glorifying our Lord! He will leave you with a song in your heart and Jesus on your mind. Come, fellowship and celebrate with the Olivet Family on this very special evening! Riverwalk Arts Festival Call for Artist

The Riverwalk Arts Festival is holding a call for artist for its 24th annual festival planned for March 24 and March 25. Applications are available online at www.santarosaarts.org. Application deadline is Feb. 1. This year’s show will feature juried fine art, cash awards, heritage/folk art, cultural performers, continuous music entertainment, and other attractions. There will be awards given from fine art and best of show as well as first, second, and merit awards in each category. English as a Second Language Classes

Santa Rosa Adult School is offering English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes to aid the growing population of non-native English speakers in the area. The classes will provide life skills that are needed in reading, writing, and speaking English.  The program's goal is to help students function effectively in their daily routines.

Classes are $30 per term with proof of Florida residency for the last 12 months.  The classes are $120 per term without proof of residency. Classes are from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The next term begins January 23, 2012.  However, students may enroll at any time during the term.

Divorce Recovery Workshop

Christ United Methodist Church will be hosting a nondenominational eight week divorce recovery workshop beginning on Feb. 1. The workshop will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. with activitites provided for children of all ages. To ensure there is enough material, reservations are requested. Gulf Coast Bluegrass monthly concert

The GCBMA monthly concert on January 28 (Saturday) will be held at PSC, Milton Campus, Student Activity Center.  Doors open at 5 p.m. and concerts start at 6 p.m. Performing the January concerts are Sweetwater Run from Laurel Hill, Fla., at 6 p.m. and Southern Sounds from Pensacola at 7 p.m.  Public is welcome! The admission is $3 for GCBMA members and $5 for non-members.  The PSC Alpha Beta Gamma Student Business Club offers dinners and refreshments starting at 5 p.m. After the concerts there are door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.

 

Central Santa Rosa Republicans

The Central Santa Rosa County Republican Club will be holding its monthly meeting on Feb. 2 at the Red Barn on Highway 90 in Milton. A no host meal will start at 5:30 p.m. with meeting/presentation to follow at 6:45 p.m. This month’s invited guest speakers will be candidates for the elected office of Sheriff, District 5 County Commissioner, and District 2 School Board. Guest speakers will be taking this opportunity to present their platform for the upcoming election. So come visit us and bring a friend, we look forward to meeting you. Veterans Upward Bound offers free refresher courses for vets and more!

If you are a military veteran wanting to achieve your dream of a college education, the Veterans Upward Bound program at Pensacola State College can help. The program prepares eligible veterans for entry into college with free non-credit refresher courses and helps veterans apply for financial aid and scholarships. Classes are available throughout the year.

Active and Retired Federal Employees to meet

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), Chapter 917, will hold their regular monthly meeting Feb. 2, at 10:45 a.m. at Ryan's Restaurant in Pace. All active or retired federal employees are invited to attend. Our speaker will be Elizabeth Manning from Jackson-Hewett Tax Preparers speaking on changes in tax laws. Santa Rosa County Tobacco-Free Coalition holds meeting

The Santa Rosa County Tobacco-Free Coalition will hold its next meeting on Feb. 2, at 4 p.m. at the Santa Rosa County Health Department, 5527 Stewart Street in Milton.  This meeting will review the first half of the fiscal year and discuss work plan activities for the upcoming quarter. The Santa Rosa County Tobacco-Free Coalition began in September 2008 as a partnership of community members and agencies working together with a mission to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use and provide education on the dangers of tobacco abuse among children and adults in the county. Any interested citizens or community groups are encouraged to attend the meeting and join the coalition.

Milton Caregiver Support Group

Council on Aging of West Florida will host a Milton Caregiver Support Group Meeting on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. There is no cost and the public is invited. Reservations are not required. The meeting will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church located at 6451 Park Avenue. The group meets on the first Thursday of each month at the same time and location. County residency is not required to attend.

The support group is designed to reduce stress, increase coping skills, provide strategies for effective management of care giving tasks and enable caregivers to provide high quality care in the home. The programs are sponsored by Council on Aging of West Florida, the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Northwest Florida Area Agency on Aging. Democratic Party Yard Sale

The Santa Rosa County Democrats Monthly Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., at 5746 Stewart Street, Milton. Items for sale will include toys, stuffed animals, books, kitchen items, glassware, tools, technology, and many miscellaneous items.  In addition, there will be furniture and garden equipment for sale.

Country and Western Dance

Gulf Coast Stitchery Guild

The Gulf Coast Stitchery Guild will hold its bi-annual Needlework Exhibit beginning Feb. 1, 2012 and running through March 4, 2012. The exhibit will be at St. Mark's Methodist Church on 12th Avenue in Pensacola, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The Guild will be stitching on site on Monday mornings. There will be over 100 needlework pieces on display. In addition, the St. Mark Art group will have their artwork, including watercolor, oil and other media up for show at the same location and times.

 

Republican Club of Santa Rosa County monthly meeting

The Republican Club of Santa Rosa County will hold its next monthly meeting and dutch treat dinner at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7.  The featured speaker will be Stan Colie Nichols, Santa Rosa County Tax Collector. Bagdad Lecture Series Starts New Year with “The Architectural Styles of Bagdad”

The Bagdad Village Preservation Association begins its 2012 Lecture Series with “The Architectural Styles of Bagdad,’ recounting the unique home styles of the Village of Bagdad. Unlike many sawmill towns, where the company constructed, usually over a short period of time, very few styles of homes for its executives and workers, Bagdad’s homes were constructed over a period of time covering 111 years, and saw multiple styles, such as Creole cottages, saltboxes, four squares, and duplexes, to name a few. Restorer and builder Michael Johnson will discuss the many styles to be found in Bagdad, and will give their history and architectural characteristics.

The presentation will be held Feb. 4, 10 a.m. at the Bagdad Village Museum, 4512 Church Street, Bagdad, with refreshments following. There is no cost and all are welcome. 7th Annual Woodstoke Pottery Festival

The Gulf Coast Kiln Walk Society, Inc. will be hosting the 7th Annual Woodstoke Pottery Festival on Saturday, Feb. 4.  The event runs from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.   This pottery festival coincides with the conclusion of this year's Gulf Coast Clay Conference.

The public is invited to the festival and assist with the unloading of the Society's 32 foot wood-fired Anagama kiln. Many one of a kind items will be unveiled. Society members will be exhibiting and selling their artwork. Chili will be served by the SRACF.  Sponsor pots and pottery chili bowls will be available to support the Society.

Property Appraiser Greg Brown sets south end hours

Greg Brown, Santa Rosa County Property Appraiser, will be accepting Homestead Exemption applications as well as scheduling appointments in Navarre and Gulf Breeze Feb. 6.

Walk-in appointments are welcome on a first come, first serve basis:

Navarre Garden Club General Membership Meeting

The Navarre Garden Club will hold their monthly on Feb. 7. The meeting will be held at the Tuscan Grill, Hidden Creek Golf Club. Social time begins at 9 am with the meeting starting at 9:15.

Many activities are schedule throughout the month of February. A Valentine's Day Luncheon is one of the major events for members during this month. Members may also participate in a horticulture class, arts and crafts, floral design group and a horticulture study groups during the month.

Covenant Hospice to offer free grief support group series for community

Covenant Hospice will be offering a five-week grief support group from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 9 through March 7. The group will meet at the First Baptist Church, First Cup Media Center, located at 6797 Caroline St. Those who attend will have the opportunity to explore their grief in a safe and caring environment. 

The support group begins on Feb. 9 and will run for five Wednesday mornings through March 7.  The support group is free and open to the community but registration is required. To register for this support group, or for additional information, call Laura Wessinger at 850-202-5930.

 

Alzheimer’s Family Services offers Alzheimer’s support group

Alzheimer's Family Services provides monthly support groups for family members or friends coping with a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease. A support group will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9 at Covenant Hospice located at 6479 Caroline St. Suite B. The support group is free and respite care is available.

Support Groups are a means for caregivers and others interested in learning more about Alzheimer’s disease to exchange ideas, gather information and discuss their concerns with others who are dealing or have dealt with the same issues. Panhandle Community Theatre Presents - Steel Magnolias

The Panhandle Community Theater will perform Steel Magnolias on Feb. 9 through Feb. 12 and Feb. 16 to Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. each evening with Sunday matinee’s at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 with limited seating for each show.

This comedy–drama play centers around a small Louisiana town, six Southern women, a beauty parlor, Christianity, medical battles, relationships with men, and the underlying group-friendship among all six women and the bond they ultimately share. This hit play was made into a movie in 1989 starring Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton.

Shipwrecks of the Blackwater lecture

The Blackwater Pyrates are sponsoring a lecture featuring Dr. Della Scott-Ireton of West Florida Archaeology Network and Dr. Brian R. Rucker of Pensacola State College.  Dr. Scott will speak on shipwrecks of the Blackwater River and Dr. Rucker will speak on lumber mill history. 

This lecture will be Feb 11, at the Santa Rosa County Auditorium. Doors will open at 5 p.m. to allow the public an opportunity to view displays from local organizations with the lecture set to being at 6 p.m.

Dr. Scott specializes in maritime archaeology and will cover the extensive maritime history of our waterway, the Blackwater River. Blackwater River is home to over 18 sunken vessels. From the Tampa Ferry in the south end of the river to the Blackwater Bethune schooner at the north end you will be transported to the 1800’s when Milton and Bagdad were prosperous mill towns.

Dr. Rucker will speak on the numerous lumber mills that were once located in and around the Blackwater River basin.  Dr. Rucker is a professor of history at Pensacola State College and has authored numerous books. Several local organizations have been invited to display information and artifacts pertaining to their organization.  Scheduled to participate are the Bagdad Village Preservation Association, Santa Rosa Historical Society, Arcadia Mill, Coast Guard Auxiliary and Bagdad Waterfronts Florida Partnership.

Food and beverages will be available. 

 

Delta Delta Delta Alumni meeting

The quarterly luncheon meeting of the Delta Delta Delta Alumnae of the Emerald Coast will be on Feb. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sandestin Beach Club. Al-Anon meetings

Al-Anon meets every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the portable behind Woodbine United Methodist Church. They also have a Spanish meeting at St. Rose of Lima Church every Friday at 10 a.m. in Room 2 of the Educational Building. Al-Anon is a support group for family members of people who have alcohol abuse issues.

 

Half Century Dance

Senior Citizens Dance every Monday, 7 - 9:30 p.m. at the Fleet Reserve on 6409 Fleet Avenue in Milton.
