Kindergarten Registration begins at Bagdad Elementary

If you have a child who will be 5 on or before September 1, 2011, it is time to register him/her for Kindergarten.

Bagdad’s Kindergarten registration began Wednesday, May 11, 2011, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the main office. Parents must bring the following paperwork to registration: student’s birth certificate, shot record (blue card-available from SRC Health Department), a physical completed by a doctor that is no older that 1 year from the date student begins school, proof of residency (Gulf Power bill, cable bill, etc), and social security number. Registration will take place everyday including throughout the summer from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. We look forward to meeting our incoming kindergarten students. Bluegrass Music Monthly Concert

The Gulf Coast Bluegrass Music Association Monthly Concert and Jam Session will be Saturday, May 28.  It is held at the PSC, Milton Campus in Building 4200, which is also the Student Activity Center. The cost is $5.00 for non-members and $3.00 for members.  The concert will feature New River at 6 p.m. and The Wayfarers at 7 p.m.  The doors open at 5 p.m., with the concerts starting at 6 p.m. and the jam sessions starting at 8 p.m.  The PSC Alpha Beta Gamma Student Business Club is serving dinner plates and refreshments beginning at 5 p.m. Come early, eat dinner and socialize.  Door prizes and “Split the Pot” are part of the fun. Jay Events

On Monday, May 30, the Jay Historical Society will hold a Memorial Day Service. Everyone is welcome. Service will be held at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, Jay, beginning at 6 p.m.

On Monday, June 6, there will be a Town Council Meeting at Jay City Hall, beginning at 6 p.m. Also, the Jay Area Chamber of Commerce will have their lunch and meeting at the Jay Community Center beginning at noon.

 

Veteran News

American Veteran’s Post 1292 (AMVETS) at 6333 Old Bagdad Highway in Milton has received awards from District Four for Post of the Year, Dan Powers for Commander of the Year and Vickie Powers for AmVets’ Ladies Auxiliary Member of the Year. Congratulations to the Post, Dan and Vickie for these awards.

There will be an American Flag Burning ceremony on Memorial Day at the Post. If you have any cotton flags that need to be properly disposed, please bring them by the Post. No nylon flags as they require special treatment and cannot be burned.

 

“Starting A Business” Workshop

The Small Business Development Center at the University of West Florida, 401 E. Chase Street, Suite 100, Pensacola, is presenting “Starting A Business” on Wednesday morning, May 25, from 9 a.m. to noon. Attendees will learn about taxation, financing, insurance, and legal forms of business. Attendance fee is $35 for the public and free for students and faculty members of the University of West Florida who present a Nautilus card. Since our funding agency requires a minimum number of attendees, we cancel workshops that don’t meet these requirements. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. SENIORSpirit Free Seminar in Gulf Breeze

Sacred Heart Hospital’s SENIORSpirit! Program will present a free seminar on peripheral arterial disease (PAD) on Thursday, May 26, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Rehabilitation Center at The Club in Gulf Breeze.

Ice Cream Social to honor Senior Citizens

In honor of “Older Americans Month”, the City of Milton will host an ice cream social for senior citizens on Friday, May 27. This free event will be held at the Milton Community Center, 5629 Byrom Street. All seniors are encouraged to arrive early to socialize, play cards and discover the activities offered at the center. Brain Attack! What is it?

Baptist Health Care is celebrating National Stroke Awareness Month during the month of May. Join Keena Risola, D.O., neurologist, at Baptist Medical Park on Nine Mile Road, for a presentation on the signs and symptoms of a Brain Attack. What you can do to prevent a stroke and the critical time for treatment immediately following a stroke. Join them in Lunch with the Doc on Friday, May 27. There will be a light lunch provided at 11:30 and the presentation will be at noon. Location will be Baptist Medical Park, 9 Mile Road, Azalea Room. Reservations are required. Public Works to meet

The City of Milton Public Works Committee will meet on Thursday, May 26, at 8 a.m. in Conference Room B of City Hall, 6738 Dixon Street. For further information on this meeting, call 983-5411. All meetings are open to the public.

 

Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group to meet

The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group meets on the 4th Monday of each month from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Community Rooms of the West Florida Rehabilitation Institute, 8391 N. Davis Highway in Pensacola. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 23 and the topic will be “Share and Care.” The class is open to the public and would be beneficial to anyone who cares for a person with Alzheimer’s disease.
