Jay Chamber News - February 6, 2010
The Jay Area Chamber of Commerce met Monday, February 1 at the Jay Community Center with lunch being served at 12.
Before lunch, Chamber president, Jackie Ard, asked Linda Carden to give thanks; she did so. All remained standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.
After lunch, Jackie Ard called the meeting to order. She thanked the Town of Jay for the meal by way of Mayor Kurvin Qualls and Town Clerk, Linda Carden.
Guests were introduced. They were Janis Wilson and Diane Pickens, with the Santa Rosa County Health Department, and Roger Matthews, with Universal Engineering Sciences, Pensacola, and Panama City. The company has many offices in other states. Reverend Matt O’Reilly was also introduced. He is the Pastor of Jay United Methodist Church in downtown Jay. The pastor is also a member of the Jay Chamber.
The January Jay Chamber minutes were approved, as was the treasurer’s report.
Ard discussed the idea of having the Jay Chamber host a leadership awards banquet. A committee was formed.
Mark Autrey, with the help of a committee, will try to arrange a Business After Hours in Jay. Donna Tucker, Executive Director of the Santa Rosa County Chamber of Commerce, offered her help with the endeavor. Tucker also handed out the new Santa Rosa County & Jay Area Chamber of Commerce 2010 Community Information Guide and a membership directory.
Mayor Qualls spoke on the Community Project, being the Mid-Town Park for the City of Jay. He showed the drawings and sketches of the proposed renovation, located at the corner of Highway 4 and Commerce Street, by the only stop-light in Jay. This has not yet been approved. Cost for this project could cost as much as $90,000, if all is contracted without any discounts or donations of materials. It is hoped that financial help can be obtained by a grant and donations.
Sabrina Owens asked Chamber members if they wanted to be included in the information brochure that the Century and Flomaton Chambers will be putting out soon. The cost for the Jay Chamber would be $200. The Jay Chamber voted to be included.
Dot Diamond announced the upcoming Historical Society Meeting to be held Feb. 11 at Jay City Hall, beginning at 6 p.m.
The Jay Relay for Life will be held April 16-17 at the Jay High School Football Field. Many teams will be having fundraising events before those dates. Look for them and support them.
The Jay Pro Rodeo will be April 23-24 at the Ted May Arena.
Shirley Raney asked the Chamber if they would like to donate money to Project Graduation. The chamber voted to give Project Graduation $100.
Brenda Gabbert reported that the 21st Annual Peanut Festival will be held October 2-3 at the Gabbert Farm in Jay.
The next Jay Chamber meeting will be held Monday, March 1 at 12 p.m. at the Jay Community Center. Lunch will be provided by Farm Bureau Insurance.
