WFRI to host Brain Injury Support Group
The Brain Injury Support Group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Community Rooms of the West Florida Rehabilitation Institute, 8391 N. Davis Highway in Pensacola. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 8, when the topic will be “Q & A Time” presented by Officer Jimmy Donohoe, Pensacola Police Department. The Brain Injury Support Group offers support and the latest information about TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) for current and former brain injury patients, their families, and others in the community who’ve suffered a TBI. Area professionals who treat brain injury patients will be available at the session to answer questions and provide education about recovery. The sessions are free, and registration is not required. Support Group for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Council on Aging of West Florida has a support group for grandparents raising grandchildren. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 9 at 6 p.m. at Homewood Suites by Hilton, 5049 Corporate Woods Drive, in Pensacola. The group meets on the second Thursday of each month at the same time and location. Other relatives raising children are also invited. Participation is free. Council on Aging of West Florida will provide dinner through Homewood Suites’ evening Manager’s Reception featuring light dinner fare and salad bar.
Council on Aging of West Florida created this group to support the increasing number of seniors and other relatives that are taking on primary childrearing responsibilities. In Florida, 7.1% of children in the state live in grandparent-headed households. There are another 86,000 plus Florida children living in households headed by other relatives. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the Santa Rosa County Library System wants to make sure that all children in Santa Rosa County have the smartest card of all, a library card.
There’s a lot happening at your Santa Rosa County Library, and the best part for both children and parents in these tough economic times is that its all free with a library card. Library cards are available at no cost for Santa Rosa County residents – just go to your library and apply. Today’s libraries provide access to accurate and reliable information for homework and research, 24/7. To access these resources outside the library, all you need is your public library card. The library can also help make life after school more fun, with a free access to books, music, DVDs, the internet and more,” says Margaret Chatraw, youth services coordinator. Canstruction Gallery Night in downtown Pensacola
It’s Canstruction Gallery Night that Benefits Manna Food Pantries which services Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. The date is September 17th at 5 p.m. in downtown Pensacola. It is free to the public. All of the downtown art galleries and businesses will be open, and there will be Canstruction at seven locations throughout downtown where local Architects and Engineers will create “Can Art” with all the proceeds going to Manna. This is a national competition and there will also be a People’s Choice vote for $1 each vote. You can go to canstruction.org to see examples.
Pace Chamber Family Festival
The 2010 Pace Area Chamber of Commerce and Pen Air Federal Credit Union will be having a Family Festival on Saturday, September 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pace Water System Nature Preserve off Woodbine in Pace. Featured events will be arts & crafts, all day music entertainment, and lots of free activities for the kids. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries will be served. Bring your lawn chairs and plan to spend a day with your family! Admission is free. There is a $5 parking fee per automobile. For more information, call 994-9577.
Holiday closures
The offices and departments under the Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners including the library system, and the Santa Rosa County Clerk of the Court, Santa Rosa County Property Appraiser, Santa Rosa County Supervisor of Elections, and the Santa Rosa County Tax Collector, will be closed Monday, September 6 in observance of Labor Day. Regular hours of operation will resume on Tuesday, September 7. The Central Landfill located on 6337 Da Lisa Road will be open on September 6 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
City Hall closure & garbage route changes
City Hall will be closed to allow employees to observe the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 6. Garbage routes will be as follows – Monday route will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday route picked up on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday route pick up as scheduled.
City Hall’s Public Works desk and accounting window will resume operation on Tuesday, September 7, at 7:30 a.m.
