Pace Fire Chief Donnie Wadkins extinguishes burn spots Friday afternoon after a fire burned down a two acre lot off of Bell Lane.

Brush fire burns nearly 2 acres in Pace

Firefighters responded to a brush fire call at 1:15 p.m. Friday afternoon after ashes from a burning stump caught wind and burned nearly two acres of land at according to Pace Fire Chie Donnie Wadkins.

The fire, which happened at 4323 Calvary Lane in Pace, came close to burning down two homes that were in the vicinity.

According to Wadkins, the owner of the property was attempting to burn a stump that was in the middle of his yard.  When the resident left the fire unattended, ashes traveled to a nearby field, which then caught on fire.

“He was out burning a stump, and the wind got it,” Chief  Wadkins said.

The fire chief said the resident told him he noticed the fire starting to burn and began throwing dirt on it to put it out and alerted his friend to call the fire department.

Avalon and Pace Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze.  Flames came within feet of the resident’s home, but no structures were damaged during the incident.  The resident declined to comment on the fire.
