First Night says 'not tonight'
Those looking forward the family friendly event First Night Santa Rosa this year, might be disappointed to hear that the East Milton Youth Association sponsored event will be cancelled because of loss of interest according to prior event organizer Jeannie Hensel.
“No one stepped up to the leadership plate this year,” Hensel said during a phone interview.
The lack of participation at last year’s event that drew in approximately 500 people forced Hensel to cancel the event this year.
The alcohol and smoke-free environment helped kick off 2011 at East Milton Recreational Park last year with fireworks and musical entertainment. The event stopped at 9:30 p.m. making it more convenient for parents with children.
Rain caused only a handful of people to come to the event last year that featured a beauty pageant and talent show, country band “Cross Country” in concert and a scavenger hunt that gave people a chance to win a big screen television.
But even with the promise of prizes and an alcohol free event, the interest in leadership fell through.
“It’s a shame because it could have been bigger and better this year,” Hensel said.
Along with pageants and giveaways, there were also food vendors on site, and lighted horse carriage rides at last years FRSR.
Those looking to go to a New Year’s celebration will have to look to Pensacola or to the south end of the county to celebrate this year.
