SRC Republican Club to meet
The Republican Club of Santa Rosa County will hold its next monthly meeting and Dutch Treat Dinner at The Club at Hidden Creek, 3070 PGA Blvd., in Navarre at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 5, 2010. The guest speaker will be Mr. Greg Brown who is currently a candidate for Representative for Florida House District One. Mr. Brown is a conservative Republican. He will discuss how he will work as a member of the legislative to instill absolute fiscal responsibility as well as true conservative values to Florida government. SRC Tourist Development Council
The North End Committee of the Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council will meet at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7 at the SRC Chamber of Commerce, 5247 Stewart Street in Milton.
The South End Committee of the Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council will meet at 9 a.m., on Wednesday, January 13 at the Navarre Visitors Center, 8543 Navarre Parkway, in Navarre.
Memory Disorder Clinic offers free screenings
The Memory Disorder Clinic will offer free memory screens by appointment only during the month of January, 2010 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates: Monday, January 11; Monday, January 18; and Tuesday, January 19.
The screenings will be offered at the offices of the Memory Disorder Clinic located on the first floor of the West Florida Rehabilitation Institute, 8391 North Davis Highway, Pensacola. Free valet parking is available. Gradually increasing memory problems may be a result of normal aging, but they can sometimes indicate a more serious condition. In those instances, the MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination) Memory Screen—a tool utilized by the Memory Disorder Clinic—can help detect them. Though not diagnostic, the MMSE is a brief, standardized measure of mental status and is an indicator of current cognitive mental state. The free screening takes 30 minutes or less, but appointments are required to schedule an appointment, call 850/494-3212.
H1N1 vaccine available for veterans of Northwest Florida
The Department of Veterans Affairs Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System announces that the H1N1 vaccine is now available for veterans who are enrolled at any of the VA outpatient clinics in Escambia, Okaloosa and Bay counties in Florida. Veterans seeking this vaccine must be Florida residents. The VAGCVHCS operates clinics in Pensacola (790 Veterans Way, Hwy. 98), near Eglin Air Force; (100 Veterans Way, off Eglin Parkway) and on the Naval Support Activity in Panama City (6703 West Hwy. 98.). Veterans in or near Pensacola and Eglin AFB can receive the vaccine on a walk-in basis. Veterans who have not yet enrolled to receive VA health care should bring their DD Form 214, Certificates of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, or other proof of honorable military service.
ACT/SAT Workshop deadline
Workshop to assist students in the Santa Rosa and Escambia County High Schools who will be taking the January 23rd SAT test and the February 6th ACT Test will be held in Gulf Breeze. Alice Hart will conduct the classes. The workshop will consist of 6 sessions covering both the ACT and the SAT.
Workshop dates and times are as follows:
The times will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. each evening. Dates are Tuesday, Jan. 19; Wednesday, Jan. 20; Thursday, Jan. 21; Monday, Jan. 25; Tuesday, Jan. 26; and Wednesday, Jan. 27.

UWF Lunch & Learn to welcome Pensacola Opera Director
The University of West Florida Leisure Learning Society will host Kyle Marrero, UWF interim vice president for University advancement and Pensacola Opera’s general and artistic director, at its Lunch ‘N’ Learn event on Saturday, January 12 from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. at New World Landing, 600 Palafox Street in downtown Pensacola.
Marrero will discuss the history of Jerome Kern’s “Showboat,” which the Pensacola Opera will bring to the Saenger Theater stage January 22 and 24th. Cost is $20 for the Lunch ‘N’ Learn event, which includes the lunch. Contact Linda Lewis at 850-474-3491 or email llewis1@uwf.edu.
Bell graduates Flagler College
Brittney N. Bell of Pace was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in Elementary Education from Flagler College. Bell was one of approximately 175 Flagler seniors at the fall commencement ceremony held Dec. 12 on the college campus in St. Augustine, Florida and graduated magna cum laude.
