Santa Rosa School Awarded for Breakfast Program
Berryhill Elementary School Brings Healthy Breakfast to More Children
Berryhill Elementary School in Santa Rosa County has earned a $1,000 Expanding Breakfast Award from the Dairy Council of Florida for its innovative school breakfast program.
The Dairy Council awards program calls attention to the importance of implementing alternative ways of serving school breakfast. Innovative breakfast methods increase participation among children who arrive late, who prefer to socialize or who avoid the cafeteria altogether.
Berryhill offers students “Breakfast in the Classroom” and “Grab n Go Breakfast” options.
“Expanding Breakfast fits nicely into our wellness policy because we want every student to eat a healthy breakfast, which gets them off to a good start in the morning,” says Sarah Barker, Berryhill Elementary Cafeteria Manager. “Teaching students about nutrition, healthy eating and the importance of breakfast is one of our missions and values.”
Eight Florida schools submitted Expanding Breakfast Award applications.
“The benefits children receive from eating a nutritious breakfast are numerous and well-documented,” said Jennifer Whittaker Sills, Director of School Marketing for the Dairy Council of Florida. “Eating breakfast yields better student test scores, increases concentration and attendance, decreases disciplinary problems and more.”
