DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the second person who was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 early Wednesday.
Nicholas Dwight Fuentes, 63, of Milton, was driving a Volkswagen Jetta east on I-10 about 5 a.m. east of DeFuniak Springs when a westbound 1999 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Zachary Whiddon, 23, of Freeport, veered onto the median, overturned and rolled into the eastbound lanes, according to the FHP.
A toolbox in the bed of the truck flew off and hit the Jetta's windshield. The car went across the median and westbound lanes and into trees off the highway's north shoulder.
Fuentes and Whiddon were taken to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.
A third driver, 20-year-old Caleb Lee of Gretna, suffered serious injuries when he veered off I-10 and struck a tree as he tried to avoid Fuentes' Jetta as it crossed the westbound lanes. He was taken to Healthmark Regional Medical Center in DeFuniak Springs.
Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash.
