Authorities believe homeowners' use of force was for "protection of their life and property."

MILTON — Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating an early morning shooting that has left a man dead.

According to a SRSO press release, deputies responded to the 5000 block of Bent Tree Road at 12:40 a.m. Saturday following a 911 call during which a gunshot was heard by the dispatcher.

The caller had told the dispatcher that an individual was screaming at the front door just before the gunshot. The dispatcher was then told that someone had been shot by a resident.

When deputies arrived, CPR was in progress on an unresponsive adult male on the front porch of the residence. The man was lying next to a baseball bat.

The man, whose identity has yet to be released, was pronounced dead from an apparent gunshot wound by responding EMS personnel.

SRSO noted that the department's Major Crimes and Crime Scene investigators, after sorting through the evidence, believe the homeowners' use of force was for "protection of their life and property," according to the release.

The Sheriff's Office added that the case remains an active, open investigation.
