If you think it’s a little hotter this year than normal for the month of October, you’re not wrong.

According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama, the region stretching from Mobile to Tallahassee is seeing temperatures 12 to 13 degrees above normal for the first half of October.

“It’s been very hot and humid here for this time of year,” NWS meteorologist Cody Lindsey said in a telephone interview from Mobile. “We typically start to see some drying out in October as we start getting drier and cooler air masses, but that has not been the case for the first part of this month. We’ve had a big ridge of high pressure sitting over the eastern seaboard keeping the humidity very high. It’s allowed temps to stay above normal.”

Temperatures in the Northwest Florida area have been in the high 80s to low 90s so far this month, with abnormal dew points in the high 70s. Lindsey said the normal high for the area should be around 80 degrees this, with normal lows in the low 60s.

The higher temperatures are slightly concerning given the already active hurricane season, which does not end until Nov. 30.

“Fortunately, we are still in hurricane season but we are past the peak (Sept. 10),” Lindsey said. “We’re not totally out of the woods. ... We’ll still have to keep an eye as we go into the rest of October for potential development, but we are getting past that climatological peak. Given how active this hurricane season has been, we’ll have to keep a close eye on the tropics over the next several weeks.”

The good news is that cooler weather could be on the horizon heading into next week. Lindsey said a front pushing through from the west should provide some relief from the heat and humidity.

“We do have potential for a cold front on the horizon, maybe a substantial one with drier air, coming in early next week,” he said. “It does look like warm and humid conditions will continue through the weekend, but the cold front may come around late Monday into Tuesday. We would perhaps see slightly lower humidity and cooler morning temps.”
