NAVARRE — An elderly Navarre man was charged Friday after he hit a bicyclist on U.S. Highway 98 and allegedly left the scene.

Karl Trugenberger, 89, was westbound on U.S. Highway 98 in a 2007 Suzuki sedan at 5:15 p.m. Thursday when he struck a cyclist traveling in the bike lane near the intersection of Coral Street, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The cyclist, 53-year-old Michael Rice of Navarre, was taken by ambulance to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola in critical condition, the FHP reported.

Trugenberger was charged with careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injuries.

He was booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail and released Friday afternoon.

FHP noted alcohol was not related to the incident and that Rice was not wearing a helmet.
