MILTON — John Thomas Kelley Sr. of Milton will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being found guilty of molesting a 7-year-old child.

Circuit Court Judge David Rimmer didn’t hesitate when handing down the life sentence, doing so immediately after the jury returned with its verdict, a news release from the First Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office said.

Rimmer also designated Kelley, 71, a sexual predator.

In 1987, Kelley was convicted of three counts of lewd or lascivious assault and three counts of attempted sexual battery for crimes committed upon two children, the news release said. But, “due to the law in effect at the time,” he was not designated as a sexual offender or sexual predator and therefore did not have to register as one, the release said.

Kelley’s most recent sexual crime occurred in June 2016 in a church pantry, the release said.

The Milton Police Department arrested Kelley and Assistant State Attorney Stephanie Pace prosecuted the case.
