MILTON — American Legion Post 78 of Milton will conduct a U.S. flag retirement ceremony.

Doors open 10 a.m., with the retirement ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m., April 29 at 6025 Spikes Way, behind the county auditorium and the Avalon center.

The public may participate by placing a flag on the ceremonial fire. "This is a time-honored tradition of an appropriate and respectful way of disposing of worn flags with dignity. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and beverages will also be available," an event media release states.

Post 78 wants to increase membership. Dues are $45 a year but since the end of the fiscal year is quickly approaching, the organization is offering a 50 percent reduction in dues — $22.50 — to veterans. For those currently serving on active duty, membership is free until July 1. Contact John Everitt at 293-4957 for further information.

The American Legion is an organization consisting of veterans who served during WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon/Grenada, Operation Just Cause, or from August 1990 to today.
