An accident involving five cars ended in the death of a Gulf Breeze man who was providing assistance at the scene.

Florida Highway Patrol reported in a news release that the incident began just before 6 p.m. Tuesday when a 1997 Jeep Cherokee driven by Easter M. East, 71, of Cantonment was making a turn from U.S. Highway 29 onto Hazzard Lane in Escambia County when the vehicle was struck from behind by a 2005 Toyota Scion xB driven by Sabra C. Stewart, 17, of Molino.

That set off an accident sequence that involved a 1996 Mercedes-Benz driven by Haley McCain, 35, of Pensacola, a 1999 Buick Century driven by Joshua A. Reese, 26, of Molino and a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Joseph H. Spann, 64, of Cantonment.

During the initial collision, 29-year-old Micheal A. Bailey of Gulf Breeze pulled to the side of the road and left his vehicle to assist with Stewart.

According to FHP, an unknown vehicle came upon the scene and swerved into the median to avoid Stewart's Toyota. At that point, Bailey ran from the vehicle and into the path of Spann's pickup, which struck the pedestrian and then rammed into the Toyota while trying to make an evasive move.

Bailey was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola where he later died from his injuries.

FHP noted that East suffered serious injuries in the pile up and was taken to West Florida Hospital in Pensacola. Minor injuries were reported for Stewart and McCain, while Reese and Spann were not injured.

Stewart was charged with careless driving. The news release noted that other charges are pending further investigation.

FHP is asking that if anyone witnessed the crash to contact Cpl. Shawn Kelly at 850-484-5000.
