Speak Out - July 16, 2008

 Via E-mail Friday, 11:42 a.m.

I’m speaking out about Pace Fire and Rescue Dept. traveling to Chipola, Fla., which is over 140 miles away or a total of two and a half hours away. Now with gas prices as high as they are you would think the Fire Chief would be smart enough to find a closer school. I believe they did do that. They got a grant from Florida and started the school in Midway. But everyone quit the class because they said it was too rough. They didn’t like a younger lieutenant telling them what to do. Oh, and lets not forget, in Midway they made them do physical training. Two firefighters out of around ten completed Midway because they weren’t quitters.

So why should we pay out taxes to a fire department who is completely blind on how to spend their money. Why not finish a school, which is only 10-20 miles away than having to travel 140 miles.

Also, your taxes are paying for paid firefighters for the daytime. So how do they make it to class 140 miles away? They leave at 2:30pm. So you're paying for service that isn’t there. There is no one manning the firehouse during that time. Of course the volunteers are there. But don’t we pay more a year now for you to give us a paid crew?

My opinion is we need one fire chief over Santa Rosa County.

Thats a splendid idea. Do you know anyone who could be our D-mentor? You guys have enough problems in your own district with your own chief, read former chief. If he'd fill out a false name and info on something as simple as info for a 'perfectly innocent' massage, what else was he crooked with? What other incidents lie hidden under cover that may still bring their ugly heads up to the light of day. If I lived in that district, I'd want to know. Why was his 'sidearm' taken away from him? Why did he think he needed to pull over a car full of Latino's and start waving it around anyway? Even as big as Midway FD is, or thinks it is, law enforcement is not your baliwick. So don't come up here and mess with our ducks till you get yours in a row. I believe the Bible says, that's the Holy Bible and not the Union handbook, Don't try and get the speck out of your neighbors eye until you remove the board from yours. Incidentally, since when does mental taunting and verbal abuse of students qualify as fire instruction. The guys went there for information, knowledge and training and you and your ilk used it for your chance to abuse a bunch of volunteers trying to better themselves. You union guys just don't get it. We do what we do for the good of the community, not to get our names in the paper or increase our dept's budget or please our union rep. We do it because we care about our fellow man. The next time we need any advise from Midway about how to run our fire department, we'll just go down to the jail house on visiting day and ask for it.
