“Four Chaplains” Presentation
Post Chaplain Bill Bledsoe will narrate the story of four chaplains (2 protestants, a Roman Catholic priest, and a Jewish Rabbi), on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m., at the American Legion Post 78, in Milton. The public is invited. The chaplains were part of the 902 soldiers and seamen aboard the USAT Dorchester, in the icy waters of the North Atlantic, when a German U-Boat torpedoed at 12:55 a.m. on Feb. 3, 1943.
Their courage and determination to save as many as they could, moved them to give their own life jackets to four frightened soldiers. Survivors tell how those four chaplains locked arms, and prayed as the ship sank beneath the cold Atlantic.
Chaplain Bledsoe will dedicate a framed, embroidered picture of the four chaplains to be placed permanently in the Post Hall.
The post is located on Spike’s Way, behind the County Auditorium. For information, call Chaplain Bledsoe at 850/696-1122, or Post Commander John Everitt at 850/623-6750.
