Milton's Piecemakers Quilting Guild donates to SRC Animal Services
Quilters are notorious for their frugality and creativity, but the Milton Piecemakers Guild outdid themselves with an "Ugly Quilt Contest" held to help animals in need of a comfortable place to rest and sleep. For something a little different than the norm, members were given paper bags containing mismatched fabrics. It was predicted that it would be difficult to come up with attractive results, so the challenge was given to work with what you had, and the ugliest combinations would be awarded prizes.
The outcome was the creation of a number of un-attractive specimens, some" ho hum" but practical applications (truth is, it is hard to make a truly "ugly" quilt), and some down right artistic presentations by ladies who just have it in their bones to make lemons into lemonade and "god-awful" fabrics into artwork.
All had a good time, as members filled out their ballots to determine winners. First place was presented to Jackie Blake; second place to Sheila Hilwig, and third to Helen Hunter.
The festivities continued as Santa Rosa County Animal Services Supervisor Dora Thomason, and Kennel Technician Mary Foster introduced "Steve," an eight-month-old shelter pup who was appointed the job of choosing an overall winner. Steve had a hard time making a decision so a random choice was made. Steve became the winner of a new home when guild member Toni McCoy adopted him!
Forty-two quilts and pet food were donated to help at the shelter.
