A Milton man was killed in a traffic accident when the driver of the pick-up truck in which he was riding, pulled into the path of another truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The three-vehicle accident happened Tuesday evening at 5:24 at the intersection of Highway 87 south and Hickory Hammock Road. This intersection has a flashing red light for traffic going east and west; a flashing yellow for the north and southbound travelers.
James White, 41, was declared dead by the medical examiner, according to FHP. Four others were reported to have minor injuries as a result of the accident. Two were transported by Lifeguard Ambulance to Santa Rosa Medical Center.
FHP reports say 22-year old Ashleigh Cobb was driving a 2002 Chevy pickup truck with two passengers, James and 20-year-old Shane White. The truck was heading northbound in the left-turn lane, approaching the intersection.
A 1996 GMC Sierra driven by Ceclilia Gutierrez, 28, Ft Walton Beach, was traveling in the opposite direction on Highway 87. Cobb made the turn, traveling in front of the approaching Sierra, according to Trooper F. Brandt. The two cars collided, sending the Chevy truck into a third pick-up truck that was sitting at the stop sign on Hickory Hammock Road.
The Chevy came to a rest, upright and facing west. The third vehicle, a 2012 Ford pickup driven by 24-year-old Willam Peltz, Navarre, was pulled onto the shoulder of the road to wait for police. Peltz received minor injuries.
The FHP indicates alcohol was not a factor in the accident and everyone involved was wearing seatbelts. Charges in the accident are pending a traffic homicide investigation being conducted by the Florida Highway Patrol.
